Will Katrina visit Dauphin Island?

It's too soon to tell where Katrina will go from here, but from the sound of things we should know more by the weekend. Here is a portion of a story filed yesterday from the Mobile (Alabama) Register.

Path of Katrina far from certain
Storm expected to become a hurricane, hit south Florida, then move into the Gulf

Tropical storm and hurricane advisories went up across southern Florida on Wednesday afternoon in advance of strengthening Tropical Storm Katrina as residents there marked the 13th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew.

Katrina is expected to become a hurricane and hit Florida just south of Miami -- the same area Andrew devastated in 1992 when it came ashore as a Category 5, destroying tens of thousands of homes.

Forecasters say Katrina should intensify into a minimal hurricane before hitting south Florida sometime Friday. It should then weaken before moving into the Gulf of Mexico, where it is expected to regain hurricane strength on its way to a possible landfall in northwest Florida near Apalachicola around Monday, according to forecasts from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"It does look like it's a little better organized," Gary Beeler of the National Weather Service in Mobile said of Katrina on Wednesday afternoon.

After crossing southern Florida, Katrina is expected to enter the Gulf on Saturday, but it would likely be Sunday before any advisories may go up for the central Gulf Coast, said Beeler, a warning coordination meteorologist.
