The 74th annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo kicks off today in a manner of speaking. A manner of public speaking that is.
First up on the agenda for the 74th annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is a liars contest which will take place at the rodeo site on Dauphin Island. Sponsored by Cellular South, the liars will compete for bragging rights. As if the best liar needs any right to brag about it...
The tournament kicks off tomorrow. Record numbers are expected to turn out for the rodeo - both in spectators and in participants. Just as for last week's Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament, the weather and sea conditions are forecast near perfect for fishing.
Something tells me this year's Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo results might raise the bar of believability and make things tougher on next year's liars. It's going to be some fantastic fun for all.
Rodeo can't handle the truth
Huge prizes are on the line today when the 74th annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo festivities begin with the Cellular South Liars Contest at the rodeo site on Dauphin Island.
Well, maybe the prizes aren't that huge.
"A cooler and a trophy," said Ricky Brooks, the rodeo official in charge of publicity. "That's about it."
Yet, the liars will turn out for bragging rights, an important aspect of the ADSFR, as well.
Brooks said everything is coming together for a whale of a rodeo.
"If ticket sales for the Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament are any indication, the regular rodeo could be a record," he said. "That is from what our ticket outlets have told us.
"The weather pattern appears to be the same, so we're expecting a good year, if not a record."
Indeed, the weather forecast is outstanding, although anglers will have to watch out for those afternoon thunderstorms that can cause major problems on the water.
The seas are forecast to be a maximum of 3 feet with temperatures around 90 for the rodeo, which claims the title of largest and oldest saltwater tournament in the nation with an average of about 3,000 anglers in recent years.
