FEMA OKs Dauphin Island berm

Island Watch reports this morning that a representative from FEMA has informed Dauphin Island officials of their agreement to proceed with funding for a protective berm on Dauphin Island.

This decision in the affirmative comes as a reversal to FEMA's previous position that funding could not be allocated for the berm if it were to be build on private beach property.

At last evening's Town Council Meeting, Mayor Collier announced that at a meeting earlier that day with FEMA (and several other agencies), FEMA turned down the Town’s application for the berm on the grounds that some of it would be on private property. Attendees were encouraged to spread the word and write letters to help get the berm.

This morning, a FEMA person called Town Hall to say that the decision was reversed and that the berm application would go forward as planned. Apparently, at another point in time, an Attorney General's opinion had been rendered on this subject, allowing for the berm to be placed on said land.

Meeting Reminder: Town Hall , this evening, info meeting on cleaning the canals on the north side of the island (Bayou Heron, Royal lagoon, Salt Creek, Silver Cay) at 7:00 PM
