We'll be watching this one closely. Recent word that this Saturday's Dauphin Island Property Owners Association meeting will be largely about transferring ownership of the west end beach to the Town of Dauphin Island is a curiosity.
Last October it came to light that the Dauphin Island Property Owners were caught in a legal conundrum by the original deed for all properties held by the DIPOA.
The deed says the DIPOA properties, including the west end beach must be...
kept by the association and maintained forever as a recreational area for the exclusive use and enjoyment of those persons who shall be and remain members of [the DIPOA].
Now it appears the DIPOA board has been working with legal advisors to find a way around this wording. Tomorrow's meeting promises to unveil the secret to exactly how they'll get around it.
One thing for certain, there is bound to be disagreement among west end property owners. Many don't want to see their private beaches become town property. But deeding the beaches over to the town would pave the way for federally funded financing for Dauphin Island's west end beaches. As privately held property, the west end beach on Dauphin Island is ineligible for any federal aid.
The time for the meeting on Saturday, Jan. 20 is 9:00am and not 10:00. We put the meeting at 9:00am to accommodate those who want to attend the Mardi Gras parade which starts at 1:00pm.
The meeting will be held at the Isle-Dauphine Clubhouse.
This is an important meeting. The agenda of the meeting will include consideration of a resolution to convey the west-end Surf Beach to the town of Dauphin Island.

This coming Saturday, the 13th, we will need all the Volunteers we can "muster" at 8:00am, parking lot at Golf club for the purpose of planting 35 Slash pine trees (the course lost 400, which have been cut down and hauled off). Bring your shovels and smiles as be try to be a helping hand to our beloved island. These trees were purchased by the joyous work of two of volunteer ladies, Baiba Guess and Kathy Howard, making a quilt on the order of GEE'S BENT QUILTS. It was raffled off and our mayor won it! Congratulations to Mr. Jeff Collier!
An article in today's Dallas-Fort Worth Star Telegram credits research on Dauphin Island with progress towards stopping the advance of the cactus moth. The moth, an invasive species from South America, targets the prickly pear cactus. It's feared the prickly pear could be completly wiped out if the spread of the cactus moth cannot be halted.
On Dauphin Island, Ala., the U.S. Agriculture Department is funding an experimental project that introduces sterile males to halt the insect’s reproduction, similar to the successful project to control the Mediterranean fruit fly.
The test is showing some signs of success at stopping the cactus moth, said Joel Floyd, team leader for emergency planning for plant protection and quarantine with the USDA.
