This is it, Summer-06's last hurrah. The last big vacation weekend of the summer, Labor Day weekend. And what a weekend it's going to be on Dauphin Island. The island will be full of long weekend revelers.
Anglers from all along the Gulf Coast will be headed to Dauphin Island this weekend for the Sertoma/Pepsi Family Fishing Rodeo. That is, those who aren't going for half-ton sized fish at the Mobile Big Game Fishing Club Labor Day Tournament.
Dauphin Island beach goers will line Bienville Blvd and pack the beach parking lots to get one final, glorious long weekend in the sand and sun.
Dauphin Island condos, hotels and vacation rental homes are booked solid for Labor Day weekend 2006.
Just remember, the year isn't over with this weekend. Yes, it's been a great summer. But on the Alabama Gulf Coast summer extends well into autumn. There are still plenty of warm sunny weekends to plan that 2006 Dauphin Island beach vacation.
This weekend the 27th annual Sertoma/Pepsi Family Fishing Rodeo will take place on Dauphin Island at Dauphin Island Marina.
Anglers will compete in 18 separate categories including flounder, red snapper, king and Spanish mackerel. Of special note to anglers are the jackpot payouts for particular categories:
With fishing all along the Alabama Gulf Coast as good as it has been this summer, one or more records are bound to fall. This is also the last hurrah for summer - the labor day weekend. Better get on out to Dauphin Island and enjoy a great weekend of fishing at the 27th annual Sertoma/Pepsi Family Fishing Rodeo.
No really. Believe it or not one of the 14 proposed solutions to alleviating traffic congestion problems along I-10 through Mobile - specifically across the Mobile River through the 4-lane Wallace Tunnel - was to build a bridge from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island.
Officials began looking for alternatives to the Wallace Tunnel years ago to try to ease the flow of traffic along I-10.
They initially came up with 14 proposed routes, including bridges between Mobile and Fairhope and a connector between Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan.
We're inclined to think someone came up with the bridge idea during one of those brainstorming sessions where no idea, no matter how off-the-wall, is immediately tossed out. They all get written down for later consideration.
Say goodbye to Ernesto. Tropical Storm Ernesto, which was once Hurricane Ernesto, is now just a memory for Dauphin Island.
Ernesto is visiting Florida, where it has all the bluster of any other stormy day in southern Florida.
Here we are one year later. In the last 12 months nothing bigger has happened to Dauphin Island than Hurricane Katrina. And Katrina's effects are still felt today.
Check the wayback machine to reconnect with the news about Dauphin Island from one year ago.
Where were you when Katrina hit?
