The 74th annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo kicks off today in a manner of speaking. A manner of public speaking that is.
First up on the agenda for the 74th annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is a liars contest which will take place at the rodeo site on Dauphin Island. Sponsored by Cellular South, the liars will compete for bragging rights. As if the best liar needs any right to brag about it...
The tournament kicks off tomorrow. Record numbers are expected to turn out for the rodeo - both in spectators and in participants. Just as for last week's Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament, the weather and sea conditions are forecast near perfect for fishing.
Something tells me this year's Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo results might raise the bar of believability and make things tougher on next year's liars. It's going to be some fantastic fun for all.
The 74th Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo takes place this weekend. For many it's been one of life's staples for years. For some it's been that way for decades.
For Purvis Wildberger and his family the Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo has been a part of life since the year the tournament started in 1929.
Purvis Wildberger has fished in every Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo and he'll be out this weekend chasing tarponWithout fail, Purvis Wildberger has fished every Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. When No. 74 starts Friday at Dauphin Island, the 85-year-old from Mobile plans to be in the boat with his son, Billy, chasing the elusive tarpon, the fish that started it all.
The 49th Annual Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament filled Dauphin Island with trailers, boats and kids and their families. The event was a huge success for everyone involved from participants to volunteers to spectators who enjoyed seeing first hand what fun fishing can be for the kids.
Dauphin Island was also witness to some really spectacular fishing results. As predicted Dauphin Island weather and Alabama Gulf Coast conditions during the event were just about perfect for catching lots of fish, big ones too. Among the remarkable results, seven year old Ryan Kennedy reeled in a 42 pound grouper that looks like an International Game Fish Association (IGFA) junior world record. The current world record for in this class is 28 pounds. That's not a typo. Ryan's fish exceeded the world record by 50%.
Yesterday's 49th Annual Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament was the prelude to the 74th Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, which gets underway Friday, July 21, and runs through Sunday, July-23. If the kids' results are any indication, this year's tournament is sure to be exciting. That is, provided the kids left any fish for the adults.
You can find full results for Saturday's Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo web site.

Fishing conditions during the event are expected to be significantly above average, so the competition should be lively and fun for all.
If you see a film crew on Dauphin Island today give them directions to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. The bird sanctuary is one of the field trips around the Mobile Area which is to be included in an episode of the Antiques Roadshow to be recorded in Mobile this weekend.
Approximately 5,000 to 6,000 people will attend the main attraction appraisal event, which will take place at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center from 8am to 6pm this Saturday. All that's needed for admission is a ticket and an item to be appraised.
Unfortunately there are no more tickets to be had. WGBH in Boston, the show's owner and operator, gave away 3400 pairs of tickets already.
