The music of Cristy Spiteri forges a link between Australia and Dauphin Island

Aside from the beach sounds we all know and love so much about Dauphin Island, a constant for us and for many vacationers is music. Good music and the beach go hand in hand. Music relaxes, invigorates, motivates. Music defines us. It helps us remember who we are.

Obviously we love good music here at The Dauphin Island Times; and that's why we agreed without hesitation to sponsor an up and coming musician, Cristy Spiteri.

Opinion: Snapper limits are good medicine

It might not seem like it to everyone, but like it or not, the new limits being discussed on commercial and recreational red snapper fishing are good medicine.

Those limits, should they go into effect in January, would limit recreational fishermen to only two red snappers, down from the current limit of four. Charter boat operators and crew would not be allowed to take any red snapper while operating. And commercial operators would see the minimum size requirement reduced to 13 inches from 15.

Although the decrease in limit size would to indicate an increase in the commercial catch, in reality it's a better strategy for species conservation because fish mortality is high once caught. Fewer fish thrown back means fewer undersized fish needlessly killed by commercial operators.

Isle Dauphine to reopen all 18 holes

It's been more than 13 months since ol' what's her name flooded and closed the Isle Dauphine golf course on Dauphin Island. The back nine opened just a few short months after the storm, but the front nine sustained much more damage.

Many a snowbird will rest easier knowing their winter golf needs will not go unmet now that the entire course will be open for play again.

Holes bordering the Gulf of Mexico that were heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina have been repaired and will be open for public play on Oct. 17
