Isle Dauphine Country Club renovation proposed for Dauphin Island

Pebble Beach? Here on Dauphin Island? Pardon us while we blush. That comment could be just a bit over the top but the plan to invest up to $10 million to redevelop Dauphin Island's Isle Dauphine Country Club into a "landmark destination is very appealing.

Jan Stephenson is president of Jan Stephenson Inc. a company specializing in several golf-related fields: golf course design, construction and management; real estate development; golf schools; and water conservation. Jan's company is behind the proposal to redevelop the Isle Dauphin Country Club.

Former LPGA star Jan Stephenson is trying to convince the Dauphin Island Property Owners' Association to allow her to give Isle Dauphine Country Club an $8-10 million makeover and add 130 golf villlas in what would be her latest project in the Alabama Gulf Coast region.

"This could be a landmark destination, like Pebble Beach or Kiawah Island," said Stephenson, who calls her proposed course The Links at Isle Dauphin and Dauphin Island Golf Links in her promotional material.

Gulf Shores Spirit - We'll ever give up

We have been sucker-punched in the gut and are down on our knees. The breath has been knocked out of us. But we are fighters. We are people with grit, courage, determination and strength. We fight for the things we believe in, and we fight for the things we love.

The Gulf Coast is our area, our community, our home, and we'll fight to rebuild her.

I cannot think of anything to add to that statement - it says it all. Bayou La Batre native Shannon Dockens has written this excellent essay published in the Mobile Register.

We have friends who are the pastor and family of Dauphin Island Baptist Church and haven’t been able to reach them. I know they evacuated and should be okay. Do you know how the church, parsonage and resort ministry building fared?

Associated Press: Former governor losses family cottage on Dauphin Island

8/31/2005, 5:16 p.m. CT

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (AP) — Former Gov. Don Siegelman was among the property owners on Dauphin Island who lost homes during Hurricane Katrina.

Siegelman said his late parents built a cottage on the coastal island in 1957, and he had owned it in recent years.

"It doesn't exist any more," he said Wednesday.

He said the cottage was decorated with art work his children did in their younger years and with nautical-themed mementos he received when he was governor. "It had lots of good feelings and memories," he said.

Siegelman, who grew up in Mobile and now lives in Birmingham, said his loss is small compared to many on the Gulf Coast. "My heart hurts and bleeds for the people whose lives are devastated. They've lost so much — everything they've worked for, the precious treasures they've saved over the years, and for many their ability to earn a living," he said.
